You can be casual and still be classic. Casual doesn’t need to mean unkempt, in fact doing casual with style still needs a little thought and a few nice pieces in your wardrobe. Celebs do casual really well; when Ashton Kutcher, Ryan Reynolds and Rob Patterson are out grabbing a coffee in LA they’re still aware they are on show and we could all learn a lot from them in terms of casual styling.
Look for white – it keeps things clean and crisp even if it’s casual. White t-shirts never go out of style, neither do white denim jackets and white trainers. Wear your t-shirts alone (round-necked or v-necked but make sure you aren’t over sprouting that chest if you opt for a v) or under a casual shirt. Colours, checks, denims – there are lots of casual shirts around but make sure they’re still smart and fit well.
Keep an eye out for preppy bomber jackets too – they are big for Summer 2015 and set off your look perfectly. Okay so Saint Lauren has the ultimate wool Varsity jacket at £1,060 but we suggest you shop around as there are lots on the rails this Spring/Summer.
We think this River Island alternative is great at £65.
College style sweatshirts are also up there this season. We love the wit of the Public School sweat here but at £350 at Matches it’s a bit expensive (unless you love it that much).
So alternatively take a look at Jack Wills who have a massive range of colours and styles. This is the Clipstone and comes in at a cool £59.50.
If you want to avoid the preppy but are more of a cycling man then check out Wolsey – another heritage brand who has everything for the well-dressed casual wardrobe. We especially liked this turtle neck fine guage jumper for £120.
Polo shirts are great to wear when the sun is high but you want to look a bit smarter. Really you should look no further than Uniqlo Dry Pique Polo shirts. Not only do they have a great range of colours but at £14.95 they are a bargain and we have put them through their paces and know they wash time and again and still look good!
Alternatively Paul Smith is the king of the Polo Shirt and his instantly recognisable colour palette plays itself out across the range. We were drawn to this cotton striped number with co-ordinating collar for £95.
Okay so we all know a great fitting pair of jeans is the ultimate casual style go-to. But if you want something for those days when jeans just don’t cut it so well we suggest you look for casual chino’s and cottons for the summer. Gant have a wide range for all shapes and sizes – slim fit or baggy they will have something that is perfect in all the traditional chino colours. Prices vary but this pair, Soho the Chino for £85, has it all.
