In the latest film, Knight of Cups, Christian Bale plays a comedy writer, Rick ,who lives in present-day Santa Monica. He finds himself longing for more, for something he can’t even understand, or how to find it.
The death of his brother, Billy, play heavy on his mind and he is constantly thinking about the past. On top of this, Rick finds himself dealing with his father, Joseph (Brian Dennehy), who blames himself for Billy’s death and his other brother, Barry (Wes Bentley), who has just moved to LA and is struggling to get back on his feet.
To keep his mind occupied and stop himself from worrying about the past, Rick seeks distraction in the company of women: Della (Imogen Poots); Nancy (Cate Blanchett), a physician he was once married to; a model named Helen (Frieda Pinto); Elizabeth (Natalie Portman), a woman he got pregnant; A stripper named Karen (Teresa Palmer); and a young woman who helps him to see his way forward, Isabel (Isabel Lucas).
The women Rick meets along the way seem to know more and understand more than he does, serving him as a guide and a messenger in an explainable way.
His journey has just begun.
