In 2010 the world heard about a great tragedy in Chile – the Copiapó mining accident, also known as the Chilean mining accident. The 121 year old copper-gold mine, San José, collapsed and with it brought a great deal of destruction, burying alive thirty three miners who became known as “Los 33″ (“The 33“).
The heartbreaking catastrophe struck less than six months after a tsunami and an earthquake hit Chile. The nation’s empathy and support were gripping, and on day seventeen of the mining incident, a note taped to a drill workings to create access to rescue the trapped miners read “Estamos bien en el refugio, los 33″, translated to “We are well in the shelter, the 33 of us”.
Antonio Banderas and Juliette Binoche star in upcoming film The 33; a true story of the miraculous event that gripped the world. Over 69 days following the collapse of the mine, the movie shows the journey and courage of the miners and their families and rescuers.
The 33 is out in cinemas 29th January 2016.
